Biocore Environmental Ltd. Press Release
Receiver appointed to Green Generation Biogas Plant
It is with great concern that we have learned of the appointment of a receiver to Ireland’s only Biomethane production plant. This is symptomatic of many years of failure by the State to address the issue of renewable gas in the Irish economy.
We have now arrived at a point in time where the state is about to spend €1 billion euro to provide yet more fossil fuel capacity through the acquisition of a floating gas terminal while the potential for renewable energy within the country is ignored. All of this could have been avoided, as well as the uncertainty surrounding employment at the Green Generation facility and the fulfilment of legally binding climate goals, if the same level of support extended to industries throughout Europe had also been made available to the Irish industry.
As we watch the difficulties encountered by our only operating biomethane plant, it is clear that the market has been destroyed by the importation of falsified Palm Oil masquerading as a renewable product. Not alone must renewable gas compete with this product; it is currently in receipt of state support through a carbon credit multiplier. This product is, as we write, either banned or severely restricted throughout Europe, and unless we do the same, no renewable gas industry will grow in Ireland.
The implications for Ireland are substantial: fines for failing to reach renewable energy targets, no international investors in the market, no energy security, no improvement in water quality and missed opportunities for farmers to diversify their income. Ireland is recognised internationally as having all the base requirements for a successful biogas sector, but due to inaction, we are currently, and will remain, bottom of the class, with investment decisions paused until the issues are resolved..
